Sanders was appointed Associate Judge in January of 2010 by the twelve elected Circuit Judges of the Fourth Judicial

Circuit. She has served nearly four years as an Associate Judge, presiding over criminal and civil cases, including jury trials, as well as juvenile cases, in the nine-county circuit.

In addition to daily court responsibilities, Sanders presides over the Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Veterans Court in Effingham County. She helped initiate the Mental Health and Veterans Courts, which, along with the Drug Court, are appropriately titled “problem-solving courts.”

According to Sanders, decades of research prove that these problem-solving courts save millions of dollars and increase public safety by proactively addressing the issues that repeatedly lead people through the doors of our prisons, jails and hospitals. Sanders says,

“It has been my honor to serve as an Associate Judge and, specifically, as the judge of the problem-solving courts. It is my goal to remain faithful to the letter of the law and to utilize evidence-based and common sense approaches. I shall always be humbled by the authority that I have been granted and the great responsibility that I have to the people in our communities and those that appear before me. As a Circuit Judge, I will build on my experience and my record of respect and service to the people of the Fourth Judicial Circuit.”

Prior to serving as Associate Judge, Sanders served as the Lead Public Defender in Marion County, as an Assistant Attorney General in Springfield, and as a staff attorney at Land of Lincoln Legal Aid in Carbondale.

Sanders graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1998. She is the daughter of Jack and Bonnie Sanders of Centralia. She and her husband, Jamie Holzer, a math teacher at Centralia High School, live in Centralia where they are both active in the rescue and care of abused, neglected and abandoned animals.
