Officials with the Illinois Department of Corrections say a 26-year-old prison inmate has died in his cell at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, about 30 miles north of Vandalia.
Spokeswoman Stacey Solano says prison staff found the man unresponsive in his cell a little after 7 p.m. yesterday.
She says prison employees began life-saving measures and called emergency responders who continued the efforts. However, the inmate was pronounced dead about 7:33 p.m.
Solano says prison authorities do not suspect foul play but an investigation is under way. She provided no more details.
Graham is a medium-security prison that currently houses about 1,800 inmates. It is the parent institution of the graham reception and reclassification unit, which houses just under 300 inmates, most of whom are just being processed into the system.
