SALEM – The Salem Lady Wildcats returned to their winning ways as they dismantled visiting Paris in Apollo play Monday night 61-40 at B.E. Gumm Gymnasium.
Salem took an early lead, but the teams played tight into the second quarter. However, Salem would take control midway through the frame and hold a 25-18 lead at the break.
Salem was better at the free throw line as they connected at a 63% clip, and head coach Janet Holst thinks it was a combination of several factors that led to the win.
“Free throws were much improved. I just thought our focus was better. we still missed too many easy shots, but our focus was better. We didn’t give up on it.”
Holst added, “Defensively, I thought we played really hard. I thought we stayed with the game plan. The kids pushed the ball and we had everybody on the same page.”
Dearria Watson led Salem with 15 points followed by Emily Baer with 14 and Maddi Hood with 10.
“We distributed well,” said Holst. “We had some kids step up who hadn’t for a while. EB [Emily Baer] and Maddi [Hood] both came off the bench and had really nice games for us.”
The Salem JV were also winners Monday night, beating Paris 41-27.
Salem is 10-6 and will return to action Thursday night at home against Charleston.
