• Mt. Vernon man airlifted after I-57 accident

    Two people were injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 57. traffic accident

    It happened around 1:30 p.m. on northbound I-57 at mile post 66.

    Illinois State Police say a 2008 GMC Denali SUV hit a attachment on the back of an IDOT truck that was stopped in the left lane. Police say the IDOT truck was using its lights and arrow signal to direct traffic away from crews repairing potholes.

    The driver of the SUV, Robert W. Venturi, 79, of Mt. Vernon, was taken from the scene by ambulance then flown to a regional hospital for treatment.

    The driver of the IDOT vehicle, Billy M. Reed, 59, of Benton, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

    Veturi is charged with violating Scott’s Law and failure to wear a seatbelt.

    Northbound I-57 was closed for nearly an hour after the crash, with traffic diverted at the West Frankfort exit.
