• Vernon teen dead of apparent self-inflicted gun shot

    VERNON — Sad news to report from the small Marion County community of Patoka and Vernon, according to the Marion County Coroner’s office, it’s investigating the Tuesday death of a 16-year-old rural Vernon boy. police-lights-generic-3-jpg

    Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon says Brandon Helgen died Tuesday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    Cannon says his office was summoned by Marion County Sheriff’s deputies Tuesday to a residence on Tank Farm Road, where Brandon’s body was discovered by his family after they returned home from a short shopping trip. Cannon pronounced Brandon dead at 5:05 p.m.

    There is neither evidence nor suspicion of foul play. No autopsy is planned, but investigation continues by both the Coroner’s Office and the Sheriff’s Department.

    Day Macz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    Patoka school opened its doors Wednesday and had counselors and staff on hand to help students come to terms with their friend and classmate’s death. The main entrance to the school on Kinoka Road was open from 10 a.m. Wednesday morning until 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
