SALEM — Bail has been set at $250,000 for a 58-year-old rural Centralia man charged in Marion County court with sexcrimessexually assaulting a child.

Jack C. Costner was arrested Wednesday night after his wife reportedly found sexually explicit photos of children on his computer.

When she confronted him about the photos, Costner’s wife reportedly beat him with a hammer until he left the home. Marion County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home a short time after Costner left, but he later called to turn himself in from a nearby residence.

Costner was formally charged Friday morning in Marion County court with predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13 — a Class X felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

If able to post $25,000 bond to gain his release, he is prohibited from having contact with his rural Moriah Road home, or with the alleged victim. Costner is next scheduled in court July 29 for a preliminary hearing with court appointed counsel.
