Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has released his annual summary for the 2012 calendar year. Cannon reports a total of 441 deaths in Marion County last year, down from 504 in 2011 and 544 in 2010.
Of the 441 deaths last yr, the coroner’s office conducted investigations into 128 of them, three less than the previous year. There were five suicides in 2012, down from seven in both 2011 and also in 2010.
There were 14 deaths in Marion county last year attributed to accidental causes; including one train/pedestrian accident, one alcohol poisoning, one choking, one motorcycle accident, one workplace accident, two motor vehicle accident victims, one drowning, and one from an accidental fall at home. There were five accidental overdoses of illicit or prescription drugs, compared to four in 2011, and a spike of 13 in 2010.
Cannon says the steady decline in overall deaths in the county is likely due to many seeking treatment for terminal conditions outside Marion County, such as major health facilities in the St. Louis area. This is reflected in the largest decreases over the past few years in deaths attributed to natural causes.
He says he is fairly certain the drug and alcohol related deaths remain at an all-time low for the past few years due to the increased diligence of local law enforcement agencies and their proactive efforts.
