The State Board of Education says more than 620 schools made the Illinois Honor Roll list in 2012, and Iuka Community Consolidated School is the only one in the state to earn both an Academic Improvement award as well as a Spotlight School Award.

The Spotlight School Award has been given to 105 high-poverty, high-performing schools that are beating the odds and overcoming the achievement gap.

Other spotlight schools in our area include Grand Prairie Elementary, Jordan Elementary and Schiller Elementary, all in Centralia.

Area schools receiving an Academic Improvement Award include McClellan Elementary School in Mt. Vernon, along with Mt. Vernon District 80 Primary Center.

Multiple schools in the area received the Academic Excellence Award, including Albers Elementary, Aviston Elementary, Bartelso Elementary; St. George Elementary School in New Baden; St. Mary’s in Trenton; St. Rose in Breese and Wesclin Junior High in Trenton.
