Former Governor Jim Thompson, friend and attorney of convicted former Governor George Ryan, has reported Ryan is back in his Kankakee home, after being released this morning from a federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind.
Ryan was first taken to a halfway house in Chicago, where he was expected to stay for a period of transition before returning home. But he was instead released shortly after he and Thompson arrived at the Chicago Salvation Army.
Ryan served 5 years of a 7-year sentence for corruption. While in prison, both his wife Lura Lynn and his brother died.
Thompson says Ryan was in “decent spirits” after being released from prison. Thompson accompanied the former Illinois governor on his trip from the federal lockup in Indiana to the Chicago halfway house. Thompson says Ryan was mostly quiet on the drive to Chicago and will have to adjust to being outside prison after five years in custody.
