An Illinois political icon, former Illinois comptroller and longtime state Senator Dawn Clark Netsch has passed away at the age of 86. Netsch recently announced she was suffering from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known as ALS.
The Illinois democrat the first woman elected to a major state office or to a major ticket to run for governor of Illinois. She ran unsuccessfully for the office in 1994, losing to incumbent Jim Edgar.
Netsch was elected state comptroller in 1990. She helped rewrite the Illinois Constitution in 1970 and shortly after was elected to the state senate, where she served for 18 years.
