• Orphans take commanding lead in Mascot contest

    Centralia Orphan fans are off to a good start in the extended voting for the USA Today Most Unique Mascot Contest, receiving more than 5-million votes cast by Tuesday in Region 4,a  more than 10 percent advantage over the Winona Winhawks of Minnesota.

    Anticipating a midnight to 6 a.m. rush by the Winhawks, Orphan fans organized shifts of voters to maintain an early lead throughout the overnight hours. Voting will continue until 2 p.m. Wednesday.

    Six regional winners will emerge Wednesday and continue on to the National Finals, where the First Place winner will not only be named most unique mascot, but will bring home $2,000 for their athletic department. the Second Place team will be awarded $1,000; Third $500; Fourth $250 and Fifth $100.

    Centralia High School will again be open with computers, high speed internet and extra bandwidth for overnight voting. again, food, music and door prizes will be available for those who attend.
