Tomorrow is the last day for an online auction of unclaimed property. According to Melissa Hahn, spokeswoman for Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford, the theme of the current auction is St. Patrick’s Day and features gold coins, gold jewelry, emerald jewelry and shamrock jewelry.

The auction launched march 18 with the first lot closing at 10 a.m. tomorrow and the rest following in a staggered process. To place a bid on items, log onto treasurer.il.gov and look for the unclaimed property box in the center of the page.

Hahn says the unclaimed property comes from safety deposit boxes, abandoned checking and savings accounts, unclaimed paychecks, utility deposits and insurance policies, as well as unclaimed stocks and bonds.

The property must be unclaimed for 5-years and then Rutherford’s office holds it for another 5-years before putting it up for auction. his office holds three auctions a year, but has not yet decided when the next auction will be held.
