• Tan ban passes House committee

The debate over who knows better what’s good for you is now applying to tanning beds for people under 18.

State Rep Robyn Gabel, an Evanston democrat and the bill’s sponsor, says the concern is the increase in melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer among young adults.

According to Gabel, epidemiological data suggests that most skin cancers can be prevented if children, teens, and adults are protected from UV radiation.

The Illinois House passed the tan ban over the objections of lawmakers such as state rep. mike Bost, who, with his wife, owns a beauty salon which used to have a tanning bed. Bost commented that the House is once again telling parents they don’t know how to be parents and that the government knows better.

Bost said regulations discouraged him from keeping the bed in his shop.

House Bill 188 passed the house, 67-49.
