An Illinois State Police trooper died late Thursday night after a fiery on southbound Interstate 294, just west of Chicago.
State officials say 28-year-old Trooper James Sauter was on-duty in his squad car when a semi tractor truck struck his vehicle as it idled on the shoulder of the highway.
Investigators say Sauter was pronounced dead at the crash scene early Friday morning. He had been a member of the Illinois state police since 2008 and recently completed a temporary assigned with the unit’s air operations.
Most recently, Trooper Sauter was assigned as a patrolman in District 15, in northern Illinois.
More information on the accident is expected to be released later today.
