Jefferson County’s loss of a federal deal to house immigration detainees means it’ll be laying off three sheriff’s deputies.

The Jefferson County Board signed off on the job cuts Thursday night, and they’ll take effect in 45 days.

The U.S. government last year stopped housing federal immigration and customs inmates at the Mount Vernon Jail. That cost the county $6,000 a day.

Sheriff Roger Mulch already agreed to lay off two deputies before the board’s vote.

Four deputies and 28 correctional officers already have been laid off earlier this year.

Jefferson County’s announcement comes at the same time the City of Centralia announced it will lay off one police dispatcher due to its own budget constraints.
