• Watchdog group issues report on Menard

    A prison watchdog group Tuesday released its 2012 study of Menard Correctional Center, which the group described as “one of the most problematic facilities” in the Illinois Department of Corrections. menard

    The John Howard Association of Illinois found issues with the prison’s physical plant, use of lockdowns and staffing levels. Inmate and employee safety concerns were also noted by JHA, which conducted its site visit in December.

    IDOC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

    According to JHA, “It is critical that IDOC address the issues. Research on prisons suggests that these kinds of tensions produce greater gang violence” and previous studies suggested a “strong correlation between reported levels of violence by staff against prisoners and violence among prisoners.”

    Three inmates allegedly have been murdered by other inmates at Menard since January. read more …
