• Tenn., man killed in I-64 accident

    A Tennessee man died yesterday, the result of a traffic crash early yesterday afternoon on Interstate 64 eastbound at mile marker 71. FatalCrash

    According to the Illinois State Police out of DuQuoin, a van driven by a 36-year old Adam L. Smith from Chattanooga, Tenn., and a semi-tractor driven by 51-year old Joseph Laughlin of Wright city, Mo., were both traveling east on I-64 in heavy traffic, when the driver of the van failed to reduce speed to avoid striking the semi in the right rear corner of the trailer.

     

    Smith suffered fatal injuries, but his passenger, 33-year-old Matthew D. Fitzgerald, also from Chattanooga, was taken to Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, before being airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital.

     

    Charges are pending as the investigation is ongoing.
