• Senate to address pension overhaul

Senate President John Cullerton says senators will discuss pension overhauls today.

The Chicago democrat said Wednesday there are several options they have to weigh. That includes considering three smaller bills that deal with retirement age, salary caps and cost-of-living increases. They could also take up a bill sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan that cuts benefits across the board.

Also Wednesday there was movement on an idea to make schools pick up retirement costs. Democratic Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a key player in pension talks, says she’s readied a bill that would require state universities and community colleges to start paying their own pension costs. The heads of several schools agreed to the idea earlier this month.

    Lawmakers adjourn Friday.
