Nearly 4,500 civilian workers at southwestern Illinois’ Scott Air Force Base will begin taking an unpaid day off in a month for the rest of the fiscal year as part of the automatic federal spending cuts.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports the workers will take the first of 11 unpaid days on July 8.

That’s also the day Scott’s commissary will begin being closed every Monday until Sept. 30 as part of the cuts. That site is a taxpayer-subsidized grocery store where shoppers on average pay 30 percent less than those at civilian stores.

The cuts, also referred to as sequester, were to take effect in march and involve 22 unpaid furlough days, though that number was pared in half.
