• Mt. Vernon murder case moves toward trial

    A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man was due in Jefferson County Court Tuesday, for a pre-trial hearing in a 2011 murder case.

    Damondros James is charged with the 2010 shooting death of 75-year-old Charles Ellis, a cab driver who was killed at the intersection of 6th and Bell streets during an alleged attempted robbery.

    Last month former defense attorney Bob Verhines asked to be removed as James’ attorney, he was replaced with West Frankfort attorney Aaron Hopkins. James is next scheduled in court June 25, for another pre-trial hearing.

    James and three other men are charged in the May 31, 2010 shooting death. One defendant, Christopher Wells has already entered an open plea and is awaiting sentencing.

    Two others, 18-year-old Demandre Black and 19-year-old Mark Anthony Taylor Jr., are both scheduled for August 20, jury trials.
