A three-vehicle accident on Route 37 Saturday evening has landed a Benton man in the Jefferson County Jail.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, they responded to a call of a truck hitting a tree on Illinois Highway 37 at East Game Farm Road, south of Mount Vernon.

A vehicle driven by 24-year old Michael Olsen of Centralia was stopped to turn onto east game farm road, when a vehicle driven by 31-year old John R. Madjich of Benton ran into the back of the Olsen vehicle.

A third vehicle, driven by 18-year old Tyler Crawford of Dix swerved off highway 37 and struck a tree to avoid the other vehicles.

Madjich allegedly left the scene, but was later apprehended in Whittington. Drug paraphernalia was allegedly found at the time of the traffic stop to apprehend him. He has been charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death.

Olsen had his wife, 21-year old Amanda Olsen and a 1-year old infant in the vehicle, but no one was treated for injuries.

Crawford and his two juvenile passengers, both from Mount Vernon, were taken to Good Samaritan hospital for treatment of injuries and evaluation, as both passengers had to be extricated from the truck.
