A southern Illinois man was taken into custody on Monday after being accused of killing cats with a hatchet.

Robert T. Cummins, 40, who was living in Du Quoin, and is from Franklin County, was charged with two counts of felony animal torture and possession of a handgun by a felon. Authorities say the gun wasn’t his, but he had it in his possession.

According to the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, neighbors saw blood on Cummins’ shirt and deputies were called to investigate.

He was taken to the Perry County Jail.
