Two people are in the Marion County Jail today, after their six-week-old infant had to be taken to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of brain injuries.

According to court records, 21-year-old Blake Alan Cook is charged with Class X felony aggravated battery to a child under the age of 13 resulting in permanent disability. While the child’s mother, 20-year-old Margaret E. Overstreet is charged with misdemeanor causing a child to be endangered.

The arrests came after a family member stopped to check on the baby at the Home Motel in Centralia where the couple was living with the infant. The family member then noted what appeared to be injuries to the baby.

The baby was ultimately taken to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia, but when a brain bleed was found on the left side of the child’s brain, the baby was transported to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment.

Centralia police responded to the Home Motel and took the couple into custody.

The baby’s condition has not been released.
