A wrong way driver Friday afternoon was taken by ambulance to the hospital, after being involved in an accident on U.S. Highway 51 with the Sandoval police chief who was responding to a dispatch about wayward vehicle headed north out of Central City.
Police Chief Andy Westman was uninjured when the Ford Explorer he was driving southbound just south of Sandoval was struck in the rear passenger side just after 12:30 p.m. Friday. The driver of the other vehicle, however, was taken from the scene by ambulance to the hospital.
Reports indicate the man’s blood sugar was extremely low and he was unresponsive when first responders found him in his Lincoln Town Car that had come to rest in the ditch next to the northbound lane. A window on his car had to be broken so emergency medical personnel could reach the man.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene with minimal damage.
