Federal transportation construction dollars once earmarked for a proposed highway interchange near Highland will instead be directed toward numerous other local projects, the largest of which is the U.S. Route 50 bypass at Lebanon, according to State Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon).

Sen. McCarter announced the funding for the Lebanon project during a meeting of the U.S. Route 50 Coalition at McKendree College Tuesday.

“Once the federal government turned down approval for a new Interstate 70 interchange at Illinois Route 160, Senator James Clayborne (D-East St. Louis) and I petitioned state transportation officials to reallocate the funding for the Route 50 bypass and other critically important local road projects,” said McCarter.

In a letter to the two lawmakers, the Illinois Department of Transportation agreed with request and transferred $6 million under the state’s Jobs Now! program to more than a dozen other local transportation projects, including $4 million in funding for pre-construction activities for the bypass.

“Maintaining a quality transportation system is important for many reasons,” said McCarter. “It helps foster economic development and job creation, and it means safer roads for motorists.”

In addition to the $4 million for the Lebanon bypass, other projects given the green light include:

    • $1 million Storm sewer replacement in Centreville

    • $132,000 Sidewalk replacement in Greenville

    • $125,000 Intersection improvements at 5th Street and Walnut Street in Highland

    • $125,000 Roadway improvements near Okawville High School in Okawville

    • $120,000 Pre-construction activities for Sunset Drive in Vandalia
