• Speed a factor in fatal Jefferson County accident

    According to the Illinois State Police, there was a fatal vehicle crash Saturday morning on Illinois Route 148 southbound, approximately half a mile south of East Flagg Road in Jefferson County. fatal(2)

    Preliminary reports say sometime between 4 to 7 a.m. a car driven by 23-year old Ronnie J. Stroud of Valier was south bound on Route 148 near East Flagg Road, when the car’s right side tires exited the right side of the roadway for an unknown reason.

    Stroud over-corrected, came back across both lanes of traffic and exited the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck numerous trees, overturned and came to rest down a large embankment.

    Excessive speed is believed to have contributed to the severity of the crash. Stroud was not wearing his seatbelt.

    The investigation continues and toxicology results are pending. The ISP, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the Sesser Fire Department and the Jefferson County Coroner were all called to the scene and assisted.
