• Centralia man pleads guilty to financial crime against 70-yo woman

    A 45-year-old Centralia man facing prosecution on charges of financial exploitation of the elderly has pleaded to a lesser Class 2 felony theft count. gavel 3

    James W. Downes faces a possible one to seven years in prison when sentenced September 25th. A 70-year-old woman contacted police in June of last year, saying that she suspected Downes, who was allowed to pay her bills from her accounts while she was ill, after she found more than 70 checks cashed in her name.

    Downes is believed to have taken $86,000  from the woman’s accounts.
