Sgt. Matthew Dean Winkler, 33, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Siteman Center of Barnes Jewish Hospital. He courageously fought the battle of Leukemia for five months. He was born the son of Noel Dean Winkler & Mary Ellen (Oldfield) Jones on August 30, 1979 in Centralia, Illinois. He married Amber Helm in Salem on March 2, 2001 and she survives in Salem.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son Matthew Winkler; daughter Chloe Winkler; mother Mary Jones, husband Dale of Kinmundy; sister Amanda Burge, husband Jerry of Mt. Vernon; brother Todd Winkler, wife Chassidy of Mt. Vernon; grandmother Joan Winkler of Sandoval, mothers-in-law and fathers-in-law Connie and Steve Oswald of Iuka, Kenny and Penny Helm of Iuka; and special aunts Marcia Wilkins, husband Keebler of Salem, Lisa Baity, husband Jim of Salem; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in by his father Noel Winkler, grandfather Barney Oldfield, grandmother Helen Oldfield, grandfather Don Winkler, uncle Stephen Oldfield, aunt Janet Morgan, cousin Michael Jamison, special military friend CPL Peter Courcy.
Matthew served in the United States Army from August 4, 1998-August 31, 2010. He did tours of duty in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and two tours of Iraq. He was a member of the Salem Moose Lodge and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. He enjoyed fishing, collecting baseball cards, and was of the Baptist faith.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval. Services will follow at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval. The Rev. Rick Wilmoth will officiate the services with internment following at Deadmond Cemetery. Military Rites will be given by the Centralia American Legion Post #446.
