According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s report, they responded to a call of a vehicle on fire and found that the home owner, where the accident occurred, had put out the fire.
Reports indicate the vehicle was going westbound on Illinois Highway 142 very early yesterday morning, when it went off the road, flipped over, entered a yard owned by Norman Willmore, hit a tree and then caught fire.
The driver, 18-year old Mackenzie R. Cates and passenger 19-year old Holly Lester, both of the Mount Vernon area, were injured and transported to Crossroads Community Hospital.
Lester was wearing her seatbelt. Cates was then taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where she awaits the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
The sheriff’s department has tentatively charged her with possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI on drugs, aggravated DUI causing bodily harm, possession of cannabis between 2.5 and 10 grams and ingesting tuluol or acetone, as she was allegedly huffing from an aerosol duster can. There were no charges for Lester.
