The mayor of Carmi is facing charges of boating while intoxicated and operating a watercraft in a no-wake zone.

The incident took place at Rend Lake over the Labor Day weekend. Mayor Jeff Pollard was stopped in a no-wake zone. Pollard was elected mayor in April.

Reports indicate he was operating a jet ski too fast in the no-wake zone when he was stopped. Both counts are class a misdemeanors.

New bills signed into law this summer are designed to crack down on intoxicated boaters. Over 100 boating-related accidents in Illinois were reported in 2012, resulting in 77 injuries and 17 fatalities. Alcohol was a factor in 13 of the accidents and 5 of the deaths.
