The fight to save the Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in Centralia has found a powerful friend in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Congressman John Shimkus has joined in the effort. Shimkus has submitted a letter opposing the planned closure Murray to the Health Facilities and Services Review Board.

In his letter the southern Illinois congressman urges the board to deny the closure application, to look beyond the political and financial considerations and to instead think about the residents who need special care and may not be able to express their own thoughts about the situation.

Shimkus says he is concerned about the residents and their health and safety after they leave Murray and worries about the tactics being utilized by the State of Illinois in trying to silence workers of the Murray Center who are the most knowledgeable about the residents and their needs.
