The funds would go to the Olmsted Locks and Dam, which is between Kentucky and Illinois. The Olmsted Project is one of the largest construction projects in the country, considered essential but way over budget.
The Courier-Journal reported that U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY., helped orchestrate the funding bill and came under criticism from the political action committee the Senate Conservatives Fund for getting the money into the final legislation Wednesday evening.
McConnell’s office referred questions to Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.
Alexander says the funds were required to safeguard U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracts for the dam.
