• Train derails in rural Bond County

    Multiple freight train cars ran off the tracks Monday morning in a small town in Bond County.

    The derailment occurred just before 5 a.m. in Smithboro, near the intersections of Main Street and E. City Route 40.

    The Greenville fire and police departments are assisting the Bond County Sheriff’s Department and Smithboro Fire Department.

    No hazardous materials are believed to have leaked from the train cars, and no evacuations or injuries were reported.

    Smithboro is a small village of approximately 200 about 40 miles northwest of Centralia.
