• Bonnie man pleads “not guilty” to grandmother’s murder

    A 43-year-old Bonnie man pleaded innocent Tuesday in Jefferson County court to first-degree murder and remains in

    custody on $5 million bail.

    Timothy S. Newell is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the beating and stabbing death of 84-year-old Rita “Betty” Newell of Bonnie.

    The younger Newell is the adopted grandson of the victim. Newell is also charged with stealing the woman’s station wagon which he used to flee from the murder scene on Oct. 3. He was ultimately captured the next day in Sweet Springs, Mo., and was quickly extradited back to Illinois.

    Judge Thomas Dinn scheduled a  Jan. 14 tentative jury trial date during Newell’s court appearance Tuesday.
