Authorities in Alton say an officer shot a man who was brandishing what turned out to be a pellet gun during a confrontation. Shooting

Police Chief Jake Simmons says the man wounded during the encounter Tuesday afternoon was sent to a hospital. His medical status wasn’t clear Wednesday.

Police say officers responded to a report of a man pointing a gun at people in the street. Officers confronted him and ordered him several times to get on the ground. But authorities say an officer shot the man when he refused to comply and pulled a gun from his waistband.

Simmons says the man’s gun turned out to be an “airsoft” pellet gun that looked identical to a semi-automatic weapon.

The officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome.
