• Updated to three reported dead from storms in Washington County, several injured

    Officials are reporting one person was killed and others injured in Washington County, as strong storms and tornadoes swept across southern Illinois Sunday. SevereWeather

    Major damage was reported in Washington County, particularly in and around the community of New Minden.

    Washington County EMA coordinator Rick Greten reports that one person was killed south of New Minden and injuries reported also in that area.

    As we reported earlier on our Facebook pages, several homes and a church were damaged in the storms. Eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 in Washington County were closed for a time after two semis overturned.

    However, Illinois State Police say Route 177 just west of New Minden is expected to be closed “for an extended period of time.”

    Update: Officials are now reporting a second fatality from storms in Washington County.  According to the Associated Press, an elderly man and his sister were killed in New Minden. The National Weather Service is reporting EF4 damage in New Minden. 1613 11/17/2013

    Update: Washington County Coroner’s office is reporting 80-year-old Joseph R. Hoy and is 78-year-old sister Frances J. Hoy were the two fatalities from Sunday storms in New Minden, Ill., in Washington County. 1917 11/17/2013.
