A 46-year-old Murphysboro alderman is claiming insanity at the time he allegedly attempted to escape from Jackson county jail last month, according to his attorney, Tim Ting.

Ron Nolan faces charges of attempted escape, aggravated battery — both are Class 2 felonies — and a charge of resisting a peace officer which is a Class 4 felony.

Nolan previously was indicted on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, kidnapping, and unlawful restraint.

Nolan was sworn in as an Alderman for Ward 1 in Murphysboro on May 1, and his term is supposed to run until April 30, 2017. He remains jailed; his next court date is Dec. 20.
