According to the Illinois State Police, occupants of a car involved in a single vehicle crash around 12:45 Sunday afternoon on Cartter Road south of Salem were airlifted to St. Louis hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Accident reports say the driver of the car, 39-year-old Jonathan Spencer, of Salem, was westbound on Cartter Road when he left the north side of the road, came back onto the pavement, and then left the south side of the road. His car then overturned multiple times before coming to a stop on the driver’s side in a field.

Spencer was taken to Salem Township Hospital and was then airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital.

A passenger, 32-year-old Brian Cushman, of Kell, was airlifted from the scene to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

State police say neither Spencer or Cushman were wearing seatbelts.

The investigation into the wreck is continuing and there has been no decision on any charges.
