    United Way “Play It Forward” – Mt. Vernon
    Donate new & used sports equipment, cleats, sports clothing and more to help all kids stay active! Collection of new and used sporting equipment and gear. Drop off at YMCA in Mt.Vernon. Donations will also be accepted at the United Way office until distribution on August 16th. Call 242-8000.

    First Friday of each month: Free haircuts for Veterans – Centralia
    There will be free haircuts for Veterans the first Friday of each month. It will be held at the American Legion Post 446, 117 South Poplar, Centralia from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Presented by American legion Post 446 & Kaskaskia College Cosmetology Department.

    August 1-3: Monty Python Act – Salem
    Salem Community Theatre on 119 South Broadway tells the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table with a twist of comedy.  How about beautiful show girls, rabbits and French people?  It’s wacky!

    August 1: Paradigm Project Finale – Mt. Vernon
    Friday, August 1st, Victory Christian Center in Mount Vernon will be presenting The Paradigm Project Finale.  After a week of services with speakers and musicians from the area coming in, we’re ending the week with an outdoor block party.  There will be food, games, and prizes, with the band, As We Are ending the night with a live performance.  The event will start at 5:30pm and the band will play later in the evening.  We encourage all to attend as the event is free and open to the public.  Hope to see you there.

    August 2: Living Color Living United Color 5K Run – Mt. Vernon
    Veterans Park in Mt.Vernon. Registration at 7:30am, race starts at 9am. A fun run raising awareness and funds for the support of issues in our community. Dress up, color up, color run or walk! Call 242-8000 for more info.

    August 2: 4H BBQ – Mt. Vernon
    Mt.Vernon City Park, serving hours 11am-4pm. Cost is $6 advance, $7 at door, carry outs available. Proceeds toward Jefferson County 4-H Program and Don Lee Extension Center.

    August 9: Ice Cream Social – Mt. Vernon
    Jefferson County Historical Village at 10am. Join in for an old fashioned ice cream social with ice cream and homemade cake. Also, live entertainment and tours of the village. Call 246-0033.

    August 9: Memorial Poker Run – Mt. Vernon/Woodlawn/New Minden/Sandoval
    2nd Annual Kelly Lewis Memorial Poker Run will ride Saturday, August 9 starting at 11:30 AM at Waterkotte Harley-Davidson in Mt. Vernon. The run will stop at Bub’s Pub in Sandoval, Blue Room in New Minden, Woodlawn Bar, and Frosty Mug in Mt. Vernon.  All proceeds from the run will benefit childhood cancer research.

    August 13-14: Gun Safety Class – Centralia
    There will be a gun safety class held at the Centralia VFW Post 2055. On August 13th and 14th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A light lunch will be served. For more information contract Clinton CO. Sheriff Dept. at 618-594-4555. This is not a carry conceal class!

    August 15-17: Balloon Festival – Centralia
    Foundation Park in Centralia. Friday 3-10pm, Sat 6am-10pm & Sun 6am-7pm

    The 25th annual hot air balloon festival will feature 40 hot air balloons, races, glows, balloon rides, entertainment, craft fair, kids area, concessions & more. Call 533-2600 or 532-6789

    August 16: Kiwanis Fun Day Bike Ride – Rend Lake
    Rend Lake Visitors Center starting at 7am. Choice of tour distances: 12, 30, 60 or 100 miles. Call 237-1220.

    August 21: Comedy – Woodlawn
    Slap Happy Comedy: Thu, Aug 21 at Woodlawn Christian Church at 7pm. A night of clean, clever, upbeat, fun for the whole family comedy. Featuring Joe Kessler & Eric Gascoigne

    August 23: Dancing With Our Stars – Mt. Vernon
    The Girl Scouts will host the 6th Annual Dancing With Our Stars Fundraiser Sat, Aug 23 at the Mt.Vernon Holiday Inn

    Cocktail hour & silent auction starts at 5:30pm, Dinner at 6:30, Dance competition at 7:30pm. Tickets are $45 (includes dinner and a night of dancing) Contact Tricia Higgins at 242-0579 for more information.
