American Cancer Society presents “Bark for Life.” A fundraising even that will honor the care giving qualities of our canine “Best Friends.” Registration begins at 8am at the North Shelter House in the Mt. Vernon Park. Opening Ceremony is at 9am and contests begin at 9:30am. Kid’s Fishing Derby will be at Crab Orchard’s Prairie Creek Recreation Area on Saturday from 8am-Noon. The Kid’s Fishing Derby is a free event hosted by the Refuge and many local sponsors. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend the day together on the Refuge fishing. The Derby is for kids 12 and under. Registration begins at 8am. Rend Lake Fireworks Festival brought to you by the Benton/West City Chamber of Commerce and the Corps of Engineers celebrates our Nation’s Independence with one of the finest fireworks shows in Southern Illinois. Fireworks will be shot from the Rend Lake Dam area at 9:30pm. Gates open at 4pm. Kids’ activities, music and food vendors will be available at the Spillway Event Area from 4pm-11pm. Note: the main dam road will be closed to all thru traffic beginning at approximately 9pm and will remain closed until approximately 20 minutes following the fireworks show.
