Upcoming area blood drives The American Red Cross urgently needs donors to help prevent an emergency blood shortage following the Independence Day holiday. Platelet donors and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O negative, B negative and A negative, are encouraged to give now. Summer can be among the most challenging times of the year to collect enough blood and platelet donations – yet the need for blood doesn’t take a summer break.
Cabbage Roll Dinner will be held at the Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Royalton from 11:30am until they are out of food! The dinner is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children. Call 984-2137 for more information.

The John A. Logan Literacy Program will be holding volunteer literacy tutor training. The training will run from 8:30am until 3:30pm, with breakfast and lunch provided. You can learn to tutor adult learners in basic reading, writing, or math skills or in English as a Second Language. Tutors volunteer in ABE/GED classroom settings or 1:1 in the community. Locations served include DuQuoin, Murphysboro, Carbondale, Carterville, Herrin, Marion, and West Frankfort. Volunteers needed at all of the sites. Call Coleen today at 985-2828. Share your knowledge!
2014 Morris Library Constitution Day Celebration will be held at the Morris Library Guyon Auditorium at 7pm. The National Champion SIU Debate team will be in attendance, and all refreshments will be free of charge. The topic will be “Security, Privacy and the Fourth Amendment :FINDING THE BALANCE.”
The 6th Annual American Legion Dachshund Race and Fashion Show will be held at the Marion Plaza Shopping Center. The fashion show will begin at 11am, with the race immediately following. Registration starts at 10:30am. Proceeds will benefit the Marion Ministerial Alliance.
BCHFS 15th Annual Fall Festival will be held beginning at 10am at the Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services building in Carmi. There will be tours, games, and entertainment, as well as a quilt auction and silent auction. The event is free and open to the public.
