Upcoming area blood drives

The American Red Cross urgently needs donors to help prevent an emergency blood shortage following the Independence Day holiday. Platelet donors and blood donors of all types, especially those with type O negative, B negative and A negative, are encouraged to give now.

Summer can be among the most challenging times of the year to collect enough blood and platelet donations – yet the need for blood doesn’t take a summer break.

 Jackson County

July 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Health Services, 374 E. Grand in Carbondale

Williamson County

July 30 from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Marion First Church of God, 104 Broeking Road in Marion

July 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pepsi MidAmerica, 2605 W. Main St. in Marion

Community Events

August 2 and 3

The Crab Orchard Kennel Club is hosting their annual AKC Dog Shows at The Pavilion of The City of Marion on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 from 8:30am to 4pm Admission is $5. Children 10 and under are free. Approximately 600 dogs representing more than 100 different breeds will be competing for the coveted title of Best in Show both days.

August 15

West Frankfort Guard Day Experience will be held from noon until 8pm at the West Frankfort National Guard Armory. There will be free food and beverages, as well as live music and a demonstration of what the Illinois National Guard soldiers do and have at their disposal. Bring the whole family, there will be something for everyone!

September 17

2014 Morris Library Constitution Day Celebration will be held at the Morris Library Guyon Auditorium at 7pm. The National Champion SIU Debate team will be in attendance, and all refreshments will be free of charge. The topic will be “Security, Privacy and the Fourth Amendment
FINDING THE BALANCE.”
