he Mount Vernon Public Utilities Department has lifted the boil water notice for the 600 & 700 blocks of South 21st Street. They still have a boil water notice in effect for the 2400 through 2600 blocks of Benton Road.
MVTHS Special Olympics Recognized
The Mount Vernon Township High School Special Olympics basketball team was recognized with a resolution at last night’s regular Jefferson County Board Meeting. They participated in March along with 1600 other athletes at state and won the division one state championship. Sunday liquor sales were discussed at the meeting last night. The question came up last month from the owner of Woodlawn Bar who would like to serve alcohol on Sundays. One concern from board member Bob Watt was the risk of putting more drunk drivers on the road on Sundays. Board Chairman Robert White would like the sales hours to be from 2 PM to midnight. No action will be taken on that issue until next month’s full board meeting on June 24th. In the highway section, a tractor, Rex tiller and mower no longer needed by the highway department were all approved to be advertised for sale. Several appointments were made to various fire districts in the county, Les Sinks to the Jefferson Fire Protection District, Rhonda King to the Woodlawn Fire District, Charles Pepple to the Webber Fire District and Steve Norris to the Waltonville Fire Protection District. In the Fiscal section, it was approved to deny the pay for the Jefferson County Merit Commission because it was found they did not hold an actual meeting. Overtime for the jail and Sheriff’s Office was approved. In technology, it was announced that the county website is projected to be launched at the beginning of next month. Finally, a resolution was passed to incorporate Jefferson County into the Clinton-Marion-Washington Counties Educational Service Region. That new arrangement will not take effect until July 1, 2015. Superintendent Ron Daniels says they still expect more cuts in the future. They await votes from the other 3 counties before the consolidation becomes official.
Mount Vernon City Council hold Second Meeting of Month
The Mount Vernon City Council met for their 2nd monthly meeting last night and City Manager Ron Neibert talked about some confusion with electrical aggregation that recently passed in town. A contract was signed earlier this month with Homefield Energy, but not everyone will be able to receive the savings. Those with Tri-County Electric are not eligible, nor are those residents who signed up with a plan before the city signed a contract with Homefield, as they are locked into a contract. The Council heard about reducing the Mount Vernon Police by 1 Captain. This was requested as the shifts changed from 8 hours to 12 hours and the position is not required. It was tabled though. There might be a use for the old Armory land on Broadway between 7th and 8th Streets. A group called Mount Vernon Festivals, Incorporated wants to have a Farmers – Flea Market on the 1st Saturday of each month from 8 AM to 3 PM, outside the building, possibly drawing in hundreds to thousands to shop. The Tourism Office will be in charge of the event. This was approved. An appointment of Cheryl Conner, Director of Human Resources as the authorized agent for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund to be an official between the entities was approved. There will be a public hearing to inform residents of residential development in certain areas the Industrial Park Conservation area to allow for that type of construction if there are interested parties. They will be eligible for the TIF Redevelopment Plan. The meeting will be on July 15th at 6:30 PM at the Rolland W. Lewis Building before the regularly scheduled meeting. Two projects downtown were approved to be within the Downtown TIF District, the first step in becoming eligible for TIF money. One is for a project to renovate the old B & B Building between 114 through 116 North 9th Street. The other project is restoring the façade of the Federici Building at 916 Main Street to its original historic look. Both were approved. Several appointments to Boards and Commissions were approved by the Council. Glenda Eubanks was re-appointed to the Mount Vernon Tourism Advisory Board, while Sheila Jolly-Scrivner and Mike Carbonaro were appointed. Joe Bob Pierce was appointed to the Airport Authority Commission, while James Wood was appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission. Paul Lynch was appointed to the TIF Joint Review Boards, while Teri Clark and Bernard Dickneite were re-appointed to the Park Board, while Sandra Williams was appointed to the Board.
